The HIV Sentinel Surveillance (HSS) system involves carrying out cross-sectional facility and Targeted Intervention (TI) based HIV sero-prevalence surveys at regular intervals among selected population groups. These populations are also referred to as "sentinel groups". The existing HIV surveillance mechanism is based on sero-surveillance i.e. screening of blood from identified groups of individuals for HIV Antibodies.
Objectives
The objectives of HSS are:
• To assess the prevalence of HIV infection in different population subgroups and in different geographical areas.
• To monitor trends in the prevalence of HIV infection over the time.
• To generate data for use in HIV estimations and projections.
Sentinel
Surveillance in M.P.
The objective of the surveillance is best achieved by annual cross sectional survey of the same risk group in the same place over few years by unlinked anonymous testing following test procedure by two ERS method.

A Sentinel Surveillance methodology is set-up in Madhya Pradesh with 13 STD Sentinel Surveillance Sites, 36 ANC Sentinel Surveillance Sites and 3 FSW Sentinel Surveillance Sites. 1 IDU site and 1 MSM sentinel sites are also being added from year 2009. The samples of STD, FSW, IDU and MSM Sentinel Surveillance Sites represent
High Risk Population Groups, while the samples of ANC Sentinel Surveillance Sites represent Low Risk Population Groups. Sentinel Surveillance 2008-09 is being conducted at 54 Sentinel Surveillance sites of Madhya Pradesh w.e.f. 1st November, 2008.
