Information
Education & Communication (IEC)is an integral and important
component of the National AIDS Control Programme. Madhya Pradesh being
geographically very large state consisting of varied culture, poses
a great challenge for developing and implementing suitable IEC strategies,
which are socially and culturally appropriate.
IEC
is a process that informs, motivates and helps people to adopt
and maintain healthy practices and life styles.
With
the advent of new century, the approach towards IEC strategy has
undergone a radical change. The IEC strategy of M.P. State AIDS
Control Society is based on the Communication Needs Assessment
studies conducted in the State. Folk media is being utilized to
reach the message to the illiterate rural and tribal population
of Madhya Pradesh. The focus is on behaviour Change Communication
along with creating awareness.
IEC
Strategy aims at
Increasing
awareness level among those in reproductive age by making them aware
of implications of HIV/AIDS and providing them information on how to
protect themselves from RTIs/STIs.
Some
interactive radio programmes have also been conducted. A special programme
"Baat Pate Ki " of 87 episodes has been started on AIR,
Bhopal. An innovative and highly popular service was setting up of
telephone help-line on toll-free number to provide access to information
on causes, prevention and management of HIV/AIDS.
Conducting Family
Health Awareness Campaignamong the general population
and providing medical advice and provision of drugs for control of
RTIs/STIs.
Communication
is one of the most powerful tools we have to prevent the spread of
HIV and empower people to adopt safe health practices. State's focus
on IEC is a reflection of this belief and a demonstration of its commitment
to face the AIDS challenge.
