IEC Strategy aims at

Information Education & Communication (IEC) is an integral and important component of the National AIDS Control Programme. Madhya Pradesh being geographically very large state consisting of varied culture, poses a great challenge for developing and implementing suitable IEC strategies, which are socially and culturally appropriate.

IEC is a process that informs, motivates and helps people to adopt and maintain healthy practices and life styles.

With the advent of new century, the approach towards IEC strategy has undergone a radical change. The IEC strategy of M.P. State AIDS Control Society is based on the Communication Needs Assessment studies conducted in the State. Folk media is being utilized to reach the message to the illiterate rural and tribal population of Madhya Pradesh. The focus is on behaviour Change Communication along with creating awareness.

IEC Strategy aims at

Increasing awareness level among those in reproductive age by making them aware of implications of HIV/AIDS and providing them information on how to protect themselves from RTIs/STIs.

Some interactive radio programmes have also been conducted. A special programme
“Baat Pate Ki ” of 87 episodes has been started on AIR, Bhopal. An innovative and highly popular service was setting up of telephone help-line on toll-free number to provide access to information on causes, prevention and management of HIV/AIDS.

Conducting Family Health Awareness Campaign among the general population and providing medical advice and provision of drugs for control of RTIs/STIs.

Initiating interactive awareness campaign among youths through programmes like ‘Universities Talk AIDS’ and Health Education Programme in Schools’.

Communication is one of the most powerful tools we have to prevent the spread of HIV and empower people to adopt safe health practices. State’s focus on IEC is a reflection of this belief and a demonstration of its commitment to face the AIDS challenge.
